 OOMS Family Service Opportunities

Staff and students have begun a service learning initiative school wide! In addition to meeting with students within the school day, OOMS is hoping to continually offer a weekend opportunity once per month during the school year for OOMS families to serve their community.
On Saturday, March 11th from 3:30 to 4:40, OOMS students and their families are invited to volunteer at Gallant Farm, which is part of Preservation Parks of Delaware County. Gallant Farm is located at 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road in Delaware. Volunteers should come dressed to be outdoors and to get messy. The volunteers will assist with the following projects:
· Paint benches

· Weed the gardens

· Spring cleaning around the outbuildings and within the farm house

There is a strict limit of 20 volunteers, please use this link to sign up. If the sign up is full, feel free to check back later for cancelled volunteer spots!
Also at 5 pm that day, the volunteer coordinator is leading a Vernal Pool Expedition at Gallant Woods Park, located directly across the road from Gallant Farm. This is a public program and all volunteers are welcome to participate!

2. On Saturday, April 15th, Honor Flight has their first flight of 2017. Join OOMS in honoring our nation's senior veterans by welcoming them home from their day trip to Washington D.C. Students took time in November as part of Veterans Day festivities to write thank you letters to these heroes. Veterans will receive these letters to read during the flight.
You are encouraged to make large signs that indicate your appreciation for the Veterans’ service, dress patriotically, bring flags, etc. Be prepared to cheer loudly and shake a lot of hands! We will meet at Port Columbus in the main ticketing area at 8:30PM. ALL ARE WELCOME - no volunteer limit. Use this link to sign up!
The Mission of Honor Flight Columbus is to:
  • Honor our nation's senior veterans with a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit their war memorials at no cost to them
  • Share their stories for the benefits of future generations
  • Celebrate their homecoming, affirming their allegiance and service to our country

More details about Honor Flight are available at their website, here

Please join us at OOMS on Saturday, May 6th at 1:00PM.  We will be working on a variety of school beautification projects ranging from painting inside the school to planting flowers and creating an outdoor classroom!

We ask that you sign up in advance at this link so that we have an idea of how many people will be there to volunteer.  This will help us to better organize and prioritize the projects that we want to complete.

If you volunteer, please check in at the table located by the flag pole to report for service this day!  Thank you!

JANUARY – Agora Christian Services: Sorting clothing that was donated to a free store for those in need.

OOMS students, family, and staff braved the cold of January 21st in a warehouse in downtown Columbus to help sort donated clothing by gender and size. OOMS teacher Phil Callaghan set up this partnership with the MoMM Foundation, a charity who collects donated items year-round and distributes to local organizations for people in need. The sorted clothing then goes to a free store, where it is available at no cost for those in need.
