Students Rearrange Atoms

Our Chemistry students were challenged to learn how to "change" iron nails into copper. However, upon further investigation, they found that the iron didn't really change at all. The atoms had just rearranged themselves. Because iron is more reactive than copper, it displaced the iron in the nails, pushing the iron into solution and allowing copper to form. The students loved watching the colors change each day over the three day lab.

Day 1--blue

Day 2--green

Day 3--copper color solid
